ZINE

Updated: Sep 20, 2022

When I first brainstormed for this project, I knew that I wanted to do something along the lines of nature and surrealism. I ended up going along the route of doing a zine based on Colorado. Because I grew up here, I have a lot of knowledge on the culture and quirks, I though it would be fun to make a surrealist collage based off of it. Additionally, I added the theme of every page being a different color of the rainbow. I thought that it would create a more aesthetically pleasing zine rather than a bunch of photos jumbled together.

At first, I was struggling with Photoshop and Illustrator applications. It would take me two hours to formulate one image. However, after getting used to the controls and having a better idea of what I wanted to incorporate into my zine, I was able to knock out multiple images in a two hour period. I ended up loving the image selection tool, gradient tool, and the blending modes. It made everything look cohesive and solidified the surrealist collage theme I was looking for. I found that I never really got comfortable with Illustrator. It looked cartoon-y and felt out of place in comparison to the other objects in the images. If I were to change anything about this project in general, I would have gotten rid of the illustrator images or at least gotten more proficient with digital pens.

The printers were really bad at the library, so I had to print out my zine at FedEx. This had good ink and paper so it was a good way to go in comparison to wasting money on trying to find a good library printer. Overall, I am very proud of this project. It displays my Coloradan roots but also the surrealism that I like to incorporate in my art.
